Streaming performance
ExpressVPN worked with every major streaming service my team and I tested. This included Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Max, Peacock, ESPN+, DAZN, and Crunchyroll.
We rarely had to switch servers. Most platforms loaded on our first attempt, and videos played in HD or UHD without buffering or sudden quality drops. If you’re a streaming fanatic and regularly move between several services, that consistency is one of ExpressVPN’s biggest advantages.
Every ExpressVPN server supports streaming. You don’t need to search for a specialty server or check which locations work with a particular platform.
Netflix
ExpressVPN worked with more than 20 Netflix libraries, including the US, UK, Japan, Canada, Germany, France, and Australia.
We watched Netflix UK for several hours using its UK servers. Episodes loaded quickly, and the picture remained clear throughout. We didn’t have to reconnect or change the VPN protocol.

Videos loaded in HD without changing settings. Prime Video can be difficult for VPNs because its regional domains and account settings vary, so this was a strong result.
BBC iPlayer
We tested all six of ExpressVPN’s UK locations with BBC iPlayer. Every one worked without extra setup.
That gives you several alternatives if one UK location becomes congested. We watched coverage of Radio 1’s Big Weekend without buffering or picture-quality drops.
Hulu
Hulu played in HD on the US servers we tested. Shows and movies loaded quickly, and the stream remained stable.
Hulu has fairly strict VPN detection, so you may occasionally need another server as its systems change. We didn’t have to do that during our tests.
Other streaming services
ExpressVPN also worked with Max, Peacock, Paramount+, ESPN+, DAZN, Sling TV, fuboTV, Crunchyroll, Kodi, and several regional platforms.
We didn’t find a major streaming service that required a separate workaround during this round of testing.
Speed test results
ExpressVPN was one of the fastest VPNs in our tests, particularly across long distances. We tested it using Lightway with User Datagram Protocol (UDP), which sends data without waiting for confirmation that each packet arrived. This usually makes it faster than Transmission Control Protocol (TCP).

The New York server was the fastest VPN connection, with a 14% download-speed reduction. Even the slowest result, on the UK server, retained 266.24 Mbps.
You don’t need anything close to those speeds for regular browsing or streaming. Netflix recommends 15 Mbps for UHD playback, so every server left plenty of bandwidth for streaming on several devices at once.
Distance had a much larger effect on ping. Brazil, Australia, and Singapore remained fast enough for downloading and UHD streaming, but their latency would make them poor choices for competitive gaming from the US.
Your results will depend on your location, internet connection, protocol, and chosen server.
Gaming performance
ExpressVPN worked best for gaming when we connected to nearby and mid-distance servers. In our separate UK gaming test, the closest server reduced ping from 32 ms without the VPN to 29 ms. European servers remained below 85 ms.
We played Counter-Strike 2 and other fast-paced games without input delays on nearby connections. Movements and shots registered normally, and we didn’t encounter lag spikes that affected matches.
Ping matters more than download speed for online gaming. It measures how long your actions take to reach the game server, so even a very fast connection can feel sluggish when the ping is high.
Distant ExpressVPN locations weren’t as suitable. Connecting across continents adds physical distance that no VPN can remove. For the best result, choose a server near you or near the game server rather than connecting to another region unnecessarily.
Server coverage
ExpressVPN has more than 3,000 servers in 105 countries. The network includes:
- United States: 62 locations covering every state.
- United Kingdom: Six locations.
- City-level choices: Available in countries including Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Australia.
- Less common locations: Includes Kenya, Lebanon, Panama, Honduras, Mongolia, Armenia, Macau, and Malta.
Most of its servers use 10 Gbps connections. This gives each server enough capacity to accommodate many people without automatically becoming a bottleneck during busy periods.
Connections rarely took longer than two seconds in our tests. We also used the same UK Midlands server for streaming, torrenting, and other checks, and its performance remained consistent.
Smart Location
Smart Location chooses a server for you based on factors such as distance, latency, and download speed. It’s convenient when you just want to connect quickly, but it didn’t always pick our fastest option.
For example, it repeatedly connected our US tester to Dallas even though Houston was around 2% to 3% faster.
The difference is small, but manually trying one or two nearby locations may help if your connection feels slower than expected.
Dedicated IP addresses
ExpressVPN offers dedicated IP addresses, which remain the same each time you connect. A stable IP can reduce repeated CAPTCHAs and security checks on workplace accounts, banking services, and school platforms.
You’ll need the Pro plan to get one. If you mainly want streaming, safer browsing, or occasional public Wi-Fi protection, a regular shared IP should be enough.
Indian virtual servers
ExpressVPN’s Indian servers are physically hosted in Singapore and the UK. They give you an Indian IP address without keeping the underlying hardware inside India.
This lets ExpressVPN continue offering Indian connections without following local server data-retention requirements that could conflict with its no-logs policy.
If you’re connecting from India, start with the Singapore-hosted location. The shorter distance should usually give you lower ping than the UK option.
Security features
ExpressVPN combines strong encryption with features that run automatically in the background. You don’t have to configure several separate tools before the connection is protected.
My team and I tested its leak protection, kill switch, protocols, and private Domain Name System (DNS) servers across multiple devices.
Encryption
ExpressVPN uses Advanced Encryption Standard with 256-bit keys (AES-256) and ChaCha20. Both ciphers scramble your traffic so that someone intercepting it can’t read the original data.
The app chooses the cipher automatically. You can also change it manually when using Lightway.
ChaCha20 may perform better on older phones or computers that lack hardware acceleration for AES. If ExpressVPN feels unusually slow on an older device, trying the other cipher may help.
It also uses perfect forward secrecy, which creates a new encryption key for each session. Compromising one key wouldn’t expose your earlier or future VPN sessions.
Lightway
Lightway is ExpressVPN’s own VPN protocol and the option I’d recommend for most people. It connected quickly, produced our best speeds, and switched between Wi-Fi and mobile data without ending the VPN session.
You can use Lightway with UDP or TCP:
- Lightway UDP: Usually faster and better for streaming, gaming, and downloads.
- Lightway TCP: Can maintain a connection more reliably on unstable networks.
- Lightway Turbo: A faster, lower-latency version currently available on Windows.
ExpressVPN rebuilt Lightway in Rust, a programming language that prevents several common memory-related coding errors. Its code is open-source, and Cure53 and Praetorian assessed the Rust version in 2024.
Lightway also supports post-quantum protection. This is intended to protect captured traffic against future computers that might break some current encryption methods.
OpenVPN and IKEv2
OpenVPN is also available with UDP and TCP. It has a long security history and remains useful when Lightway doesn’t connect properly on a particular network.
Internet Key Exchange version 2 (IKEv2) is available on macOS. It can reconnect quickly after temporary network interruptions, although Lightway offers similar advantages across more devices.
The Automatic setting chooses a protocol for you. I’d leave it enabled unless you’re troubleshooting or want to prioritize Lightway UDP for speed.
Leak protection
We tested ExpressVPN for Internet Protocol (IP), DNS, Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC), and IPv6 leaks across Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS.
We connected to 10 servers and only saw the VPN address and DNS server assigned by ExpressVPN. Our real location never appeared.
A leak can expose parts of your connection even while the VPN app says it’s connected. ExpressVPN’s result means websites and DNS services shouldn’t see your regular public IP during normal use.
Network Lock kill switch
ExpressVPN calls its kill switch Network Lock. It blocks internet traffic if the VPN disconnects, preventing your device from sending data through the regular connection.
Network Lock is enabled by default on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The mobile version is called Network Protection.
We forced the connection to drop, and traffic stopped until the VPN reconnected. You can also allow local network access, which lets you continue using devices such as wireless printers.
Private DNS
DNS translates website names into the numerical addresses computers use to reach them. ExpressVPN runs private DNS on every server, so these requests remain inside the encrypted VPN tunnel.
This prevents your internet provider or a separate DNS company from seeing the domains your device requests.
You can enter a custom DNS service, but I’d leave ExpressVPN’s private DNS enabled unless you have a specific reason to change it.
Automatic obfuscation
Obfuscation changes the appearance of VPN traffic so that a restrictive network has more difficulty recognizing and blocking it.
ExpressVPN doesn’t make you choose a special obfuscated server. Every server can apply the feature automatically when the app detects VPN blocking.
Leave the protocol set to Automatic when you’re using a school, workplace, hotel, or public Wi-Fi network that blocks normal VPN traffic.
Advanced Protection
ExpressVPN’s Advanced Protection tools include:
- Threat Manager: Stops apps and websites from contacting known trackers and malicious domains.
- Ad Blocker: Filters advertisements alongside Threat Manager.
- Parental Controls: Blocks access to adult websites.
Threat Manager and the ad blocker stopped 59% of ads and trackers in our test. That’s useful for basic filtering, but a dedicated browser blocker will usually remove more page elements.
Privacy and logging policy
ExpressVPN has a no-logs policy, 27 independent audits and assessments, and a real-world case in which authorities couldn’t retrieve the activity records they wanted.
That combination gives its privacy claims more support than a VPN that only publishes a policy on its website.
What ExpressVPN collects
ExpressVPN says it doesn’t record:
- The websites or apps you access.
- Your browsing history.
- DNS requests.
- Your original IP address.
- The VPN address assigned to you.
- Exact connection timestamps.
It does collect limited account and service information, including:
- Your email address and billing details.
- Activated app versions.
- The date you connected.
- The server location you chose.
- The amount of data transferred each day.
This information could show that your account used ExpressVPN on a particular day. It shouldn’t reveal which sites you visited or what you did while connected.
The 2017 server seizure
Turkish authorities seized an ExpressVPN server in 2017 as part of a criminal investigation. They were trying to identify the person who had used specific IP addresses.
ExpressVPN said it couldn’t connect those addresses to a customer because it didn’t store connection or activity logs. Investigators also couldn’t retrieve a history of visits to services such as Gmail or Facebook from the server.
A server seizure can’t prove every part of a privacy policy, but it showed that this particular machine didn’t contain the identifying activity records authorities were seeking.

ExpressVPN’s TrustedServer system runs its server software in random-access memory (RAM) rather than storing it on a conventional hard drive.
RAM loses its contents when the server restarts. ExpressVPN says its servers reboot every one to two weeks, clearing the current state and loading the operating system again from a controlled read-only image.
This reduces the chance that old session data, unauthorized changes, or outdated software will remain on a server indefinitely.
British Virgin Islands headquarters
ExpressVPN is based in the British Virgin Islands, which doesn’t require VPN providers to retain connection data. It’s also outside the 5, 9, and 14 Eyes intelligence-sharing groups.
A favorable jurisdiction doesn’t replace good technical practices. ExpressVPN’s logging design, audits, and TrustedServer system matter more, but its location reduces the legal pressure to create records it says it doesn’t keep.

Access in China and other restrictive countries
ExpressVPN can work in China, but connections aren’t guaranteed. The Great Firewall changes frequently, so a server or setup that works today may stop working later.
ExpressVPN recommends that you:
- Install and activate the app before entering China.
- Leave the protocol set to Automatic.
- Check its current recommended server list.
- Contact support for an updated mirror link if the main website is blocked.
Support suggested locations such as Los Angeles 5 and UK Wembley during our checks.
ExpressVPN also says it can work in Iran, Russia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. You should still expect occasional downtime and check local VPN laws before connecting.
Torrenting performance
ExpressVPN supports peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic on every server. You can choose the nearest location instead of searching through a separate list of torrenting servers.
I tested it by downloading the 1.76 GB public-domain movie Night of the Living Dead through Vuze. The UK Midlands server reached 16.6 MB/s after scaling, around 1% below the non-VPN result. The file completed in under two minutes.
That small difference means ExpressVPN shouldn’t noticeably extend large downloads on a fast connection.
It works with popular clients including qBittorrent, Transmission, Vuze, Deluge, and uTorrent.
ExpressVPN doesn’t offer a SOCKS5 proxy. Port forwarding is available only through its router software, so it takes more work to configure than an in-app option.

Apps and installation
ExpressVPN’s apps are easy to install and navigate. It took us less than three minutes to create an account, download the app, and connect on mainstream desktop and mobile devices.

Split tunneling isn’t available on macOS 11 and newer. That’s a meaningful limitation if you only want certain Mac apps to use the VPN.
Linux
Linux installation initially requires command-line instructions, but ExpressVPN now includes a graphical interface.
